So Long, Frank
"...And taking a step back from the hardcore Pro Tour lifestyle is probably a wise call. Play the game, see the world. I am grateful I was able to experience it; my first years on the Pro Tour especially were a very exciting time. I met a lot of great friends through the game, I got the accomplishments and acknowledgement I desired, and I got to see the whole world. But after a couple years the flip side becomes apparent and even though it does not have much to do with quitting the writing gig, I want to tell you about that side too. If you really immerse yourself in the pro Magic lifestyle (and the same holds for the pro poker lifestyle), it can get unhealthy and stressful if you let things get out of balance. I had started to build my life around Magic without putting it in proper perspective, and Magic had started to feel more like a job than like the leisure pursuit it should be.It doesn't have to be this way. There are more meaningful things out there; I want to find new challenges in life and I want to contribute to solving some of the major problems this world is facing. Playing the best game of all time as a hobby is a fine thing (and that is how I will view it when I go to Pro Tours from now on), but I decided I didn't want to dedicate my life to it anymore. As for writing... I may return. Somewhere, sometime.

Cats and the things that they can do...to YOU!

"Oh no, the cat locked me out."
I was like, "wtf?"
"Greyee pushed the lock behind and now I cannot open the door!!"
Let us take a minute to truly fathom the sheer hilarity of the situation...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Ok, minute over
.
.
.
.
On hindsight I sorta expected this to happen one fine day, preferably a day when we are BOTH out.
You see, the latch-lock (whacamacallit?) behind the door is pretty loose these days and recent weeks has seen it being pushed by old Mr. Greyee while he jumps up and about the shoe rack that's placed oh so deliciously near the door.
Once I was also locked out of the house when I got home one day and I was not amused because I was tired and just wanted to get in the house and laze. I thought it was the Wife's doing and growled at her dangerously through the door until I realised from her that she did no such thing of latching the door.
Then it suddenly occurred to me that it might be the cat's doing.
You know, you can never underestimate cats. These devious little creatures are smart I tell you. Once he even managed to fathom how to open my bags though they were obviously closed.
However, I am not surprised because our first cat demostrated that this isn't above and beyond what felines can achieve.
But this?
Locking the human masters out of the house??
This has got to be the first!
Anyway, the furore and drama went on for a good hour where in between I decide to just throw my hands in the air and call a locksmith to saw off the latch from the gap that the slightly ajar door afforded.
However, the Wife (bless her soul) apparently thought that since the cat locked us out, he very obviously could unlock it for us again.
How?
By tying a short string onto the latch-lock and dangling it above Greyee (he was by now firmly behind the door looking at us with some sort of macabre interest), by this she hopes to make the cat feel that the string was meant to be batted and swatted around like how he does to many of the dangly objects in the house.
With any luck, he may just swat the latch-lock aside and voila, we will be in.
Perfect.
My Wife is actually aspiring to be MacGuyver...
At 10 plus going on to 11 at night.
"Don't be silly, it's like 1 in dunno how many chance lor," I retorted, the ever practical prick that I am but still let the Wife try.
First time, the cat caught on the plot and tried to swat the string but ending up clawing my Wife's fingers, causing them to bleed a little.
Then the second time ending up in similar fashion.
"This is it," I snapped, snatching the string away, "this is not going to work, just wait for the locksmith."
The Wife got the message and relented, sitting by the door and still playing with the cat through the crack.
I gave the string back to her to play with the cat and focused on the long corridor, hoping to see the smith coming down the aisle.
Every now and then, I would turn around to spy the Wife playing the dangerous dangling game with Greyee and discover that the woman is still trying, damn! Won't she ever give up?
Thirty minutes later the guy came and just as he neared the door, anyone with a twisted sense of humor would guess what happen.
The door opened!
What...the...f***???
And the punchline was: the cat opened the door.
Mrs MacGuyver's crazy plan worked.
The odds were outta the window faster than you can say "Richard Dean Anderson".
Sheepishly, I turned to the locksmith and said, "Errr, sorry, but I think the cat just opened the door for us?"
I felt like an idiot, seriously.
So much for human intelligence.
After the locksmith left (but not before removing the latch-lock for us so that such things will not happen again - at a cost of 20 bucks "...it's for my transport."), the Wife turned to me and said, "see, lucky I never give up as easily as you did."
Bah, allow the Wife her moment of glory, I mused.

Hunters Three
Hunter alts.
Now before you slam me for being crazy, I'm not. I love leveling hunters and the best thing about them is - they get to tame pets!
Cats, bears, boars, crabs, giant spiders, owls, dragonhawks - it's a whole digital menagerie!
Besides the pets, I told myself that while Snow is used for pure feral savagery, the hunters will each be specced for a pure talent tree on their own.
Let me see:
Alurian is Marksman.
Heidiplump (my dwarf huntress) is Beast Master.
and gasp,
Nairula (my cute little Draenei huntress) is to be Survival.
The crux is Nairula is still only level 3 while Heidi is now pushing 21 and loving it cause the Beast Mastery tree makes hunters so much more enjoyable (Alurian is made for pure, sustained damage dealing that I came to be comfortable with in raids).
I am still considering what kind of Survival hunter will Nairula be.
The a search on wowwiki.com revealed that Survival hunters can go melee daggers - dual wield no less!!!
Rogue-like playstyle, wears mail armor and commands a snazzy pet (make that 2 or even to a max of 3!!!)?
You bet I will be loving the little blue Smurfette next!!!
But ok, i will need to somehow level Heidi to 30 first before heading down to Nairula, I would expect Survival to be a pain to level since hunters are not really made to melee...
PS: Alurian just got Revered with the Consortium today!!! This may mean that I get better gems from them come early next month. This is cool.
Not to mention I can buy from them this new, epic dagger from these energy people when I hit Exalted with them! Slurp!
PPS: The epic War Talbuk mounts will be my target next for my series of reputation grinds...of course, I need to get the Scryers rep outta the way first (I'm like 9000 rep points to Exalted)...

That's All (I know it's only simple things but that's all I have)
I can only give you love that last foreverAnd a promise to be near each time you call.
And the only heart I own
For you and you alone
That's all,
That's all...
I can only give you country walks in springtime
And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall;
And a love whose burning light
Will warm the winter's night
That's all,
That's all.
There are those I am sure who have told you,
They would give you the world for a toy.
All I have are these arms to enfold you,
And a love time can never destroy.
If you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear,
You'll be glad to know that my demands are small.
Say it's me that you adore,
For now and evermore
That's all,
That's all.

Silentsnow pwns Western Plaguelands with Kathlyn

So yesterday me and the Wife decided to take our lvl 50+ alts to grind some good old Argent Dawn rep in a bid to push them fast to Outland content, it was good fun.
Snow was an absolute monster in Dire Bear form, pulling yellow to orange mobs with gusto and often, three or more at a time while the Wife, who played as Kathlyn, supplied the sweet heals.
We dominated Sorrow Hill like no other and shut out some farmers who appeared now and then who made up their minds that it was not a cool idea to compete beside a pretty well-geared bear tank and a well-played priest. (Although we were were super aggro magnets by virtue of us being a little below the normal level required for the map :P)
Between ourselves, I gained a level last night, pushing myself to 51 and Kathlyn dinged to 52 and we made off with several minions scourgestones and bone fragments that will help us to accrue MORE sweet Argent Dawn rep, although the Wife is the more enthusiastic one in this venture, apparently for some phat loot at the end.
I was more amused at tanking three, four and sometimes five mobs at a go and then emerging unscathed; or sometimes even shifting out of bear form, Barkskin and then Innervate the OOM (out of mana) wifey.
I <3 Druids!!!
The crowning achievement of the night? Well, that has to be actually completing the first two of the Scourge Cauldrons quests which frankly speaking was meant to be tough for our level, but we did it anyhow with abject bear-like ferocity.
We down the first Cauldron lord, got the key and filled the potion bottle and went on the put the smackdown on the second Lord not once, not twice but three damn times simply because the spwn rates for the area was insane!
The moment we down the second Lord, more zombies appeared before we could even enar the cauldron and I have to growl and pull all of them to me and start tanking. And because my damage is relative low (I'm a tank, whaddaya think?), we had some difficulty killing the adds fast but we still did it in the end - while not dying a single time, no shitting.
The mobs were orange to us which meant that they are tougher, hit harder and actually were able to dodge and parry most of my claws and swipes. It was iffy and hairy at times but at the end it was exciting.
The came the second cauldron Lord who we beat down thrice because he just kept spawning skeletons and casting shadow bolts at me from afar. Plus the fact that he is RED to us, basically unkillable solo.
But never underestimate a holy priest and feral bear druid combo, we downed him and finally got the second cauldron before we called it a night.
At 3am.
Ok, I'm a WoW junkie but I am glad my Wife shares the same interests, I have heard cases when husbands have to play behind their wives' or girlfriends' backs which is just wrong. (Not the guy, but the situation).
And did I say before I <3 Druids?

Ok, end of shameless plug
A Gastronomic Experience
We risk very little yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read.
But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is more meaningful than our criticism designating it so.
But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. Last night, I experienced something new, an extraordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions is a gross understatement.
They have rocked me to my core.
In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto: Anyone can cook.
But I realize that only now do I truly understand what he meant.
Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere.
It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France.
I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more.
- Anton Ego
How true, was telling the Wife that this was the part of the movie that resonated most with me, seeing that I was once a critic of some sort. Anyway, it was a "ratty" good movie; Pixar has done it again (hmm, Cars was just a small smudge...).

NSF Caught With Live Ammo And Weapon In Orchard
Booking out
See my girlfriend
Saw her with
Another guy
Kill the guy
Rape my girlfriend
With my buddy and My Rifle and Meeeee
*No lyrics have been changed, this is exactly how we sang it, in verbatim
And you still wonder if NS is positive.
我呸!!!
PS: Apparently the guy with the rifle (Cpl Dave Teo) recently suffered a break up with his girlfriend who chose a butch over him. Sad case.
Don't understand young people nowsaday....
PPS: I admit I did laugh at the literal irony of the song and the guy's situation. It's poetic and yet, so tragic.

From the ashes, the Phoenix will rise...
Forget about the hoopla over Harry's first kiss with Cho Chang. That's overrated.
Instead cast your focus on the atmospherics that David Yates has so deftly created from the get go - the creeping darkness of the Dementor attack minutes into the movie, the Dante-inspired courtroom full of medieval-ish horror, Snape's forbidding past as well as the truly dark overtones of the rising and penultimate battle between Voldemort and Dumbledore himself in the grounds of the Ministry of Magic itself.
Watch for those and I guarantee you that you will be blown away by this 2.5 hour flick.
Oh and by the way, the movie though well-handled, is no Lamborghini which can rev from 0 - 100km in less than 10 seconds. I.e. it's slow, at least in the first half (which even then I still feel it's kind of choppy due to the many details left out like Sirius' mother's screaming portrait, the detailed introduction of the members of the Order of the Phoenix; we know Moody, but Tonks and Kingsley? etc).
However, when you get to the part when Harry forms Dumbledore's Army (or DA for short as it's written in the book), the movie quickens, culminating to one hell of a fiery (literally) finish in the Ministry (which kind of reminds me of good old PAP in its handling of matters).
And yea as usual Hermione's hot hot hot and Ron's the perennial clout. However the addition of Luna Lovegood to the cast does balance things a bit since she plays the calming voice of reason to Harry's tumultous life despite being widely labelled as "Loony Lovegood" due to her eccentric ways.
Also look out for Neville Longbottom, I cannot help but feel that HE is the second most important Hogwarts student to watch. Not Hermione, not Ron, not Malfoy, not even Ginny Weasley. This blur sotong will definitely have something to do with the overall prophecy, mark me words.
To end, Phoenix IS a great movie. Watch it and don't forget to practise on your Patronus charm. ;)

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi!
Recently, my efforts have rewarded me with a wierd-ass series known simply as "The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya".
Wikipedia has this to say about it:
The Haruhi Suzumiya story focuses around one girl named Haruhi Suzumiya who has an obsession with the supernatural. To find the supernatural, she forms a Brigade of five members in order to find the supernatural and play with them. Without realizing it, she recruited an alien, time traveler, and esper into her ranks. It is later found out that Haruhi herself is not a normal human, as she has the ability to alter, destroy, or create the world as she wishes. The story is narrated by her classmate, Kyon, who had just recently given up his beliefs of the supernatural.
of course, the series comes with the usual Jap hentai shenanigans with a very generous dose of high school humor reminiscent of Love Hina and School Rumble.

Haruhi cosplay costume!
The interesting thing about this series is that it's not birthed from an existing manga series but rather from an award-winning youth novel series of the same name by Tanigawa Nagaru who has of date written nine Haruhi books all entitled similarly in accordance to the title character's moods e.g "The Wavering of Suzumiya Haruhi" and "The Indignation of Suzumiya Haruhi" etc.

This is one HAWT Haruhi! I think she's Japanese...
Very nice to watch! The wife and I are currently hooked, convinced that if we wait till the day that Starhub shows it, we would have been octogenarians...

One of the book covers
And finally, THE video that got the entire worldwide cosplay community dancing to - Hare Hare Yukai or the ending theme of "The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi".
Damn cute and catchy.
Now compare it with real people dancing to it - with the exact dance steps! Amazing, it sets my otaku blood on fire again! LOL!!
If you are piqued to read the Japanese to English translations of all the books till date (Book 9 is still under works), the URL is here.

Don't Look Down On Them Tampons!
Don't worry, it's a good story - and worth reading - it's even humorous in [some] parts.
It's from the mother of a Marine in Iraq.
She writes:"My son told me how wonderful the care packages we had sent them wereand wanted me to tell everyone thank you. He said that one guy we'llcall Marine X, got a girl care package and everyone was giving him ahard time. My son said, 'Marine X got some really nice smelling lotionand everyone really likes it, so every time he goes to sleep they steal it from him.'
I told my son I was really sorry about the mistake, and ifhe wanted I would send Marine X another package. He told me not to worryabout Marine X because every time I send something to him, Marine X thinks it's for him too.
He said when my husband and I sent the last care package, Marine X came over to his cot picked up the box, started fishing through it, and said, 'What'd we get this time?' "
"My son said they had the most fun with Marine X's package. He said he wasn't sure who we were sending the pack to, but the panties were size 20, and he said one of the guys got on top of the Humvee and jumped off with the panties over his head and yelled, 'Look at me, I'm an Airborne Ranger!!!' (This is so like a scene out of Jarhead - DPimp)
One of the guys attached the panties to an antenna and it blew in the wind like a windsock. He said it entertained them for quite a while. Then of course, they had the tampons.""When he brought this up my imagination just went running, but he continued: My son said they had to go on a mission and Marine X wanted the Chapstick and lotion for the trip.
He grabbed a bunch of the itemsfrom his care package and got in the Humvee. As luck would have it hegrabbed the tampons too, and my son said everyone was teasing him about,'not forgetting his feminine hygiene products.' "
"He said things went well for a while, then the convoy was ambushed and a Marine was shot. He said the wound was pretty clean, but it was deep.He said they were administering first aid but couldn't get the bleedingto slow down, and someone said, 'Hey use Marine X's tampons.'
My son said they put the tampon in the wound. At this point my son profoundly told me, 'Mom did you know that tampons expand?' ""Well, yeah!""They successfully slowed the bleeding until the guy got better medical attention.
When they went to check on him later the surgeon told them,'You guys saved his life. If you hadn't stopped that bleeding he would have bled to death.' My son said, 'Mom, the tampons sent by the Marine's mom by mistake saved a Marine's life.' "
"At this point I asked him, 'Well what did you do with the rest of the tampons?' He said, 'Oh, we divided them up and we all have them in ourflak jackets, and I kept two for our first aid kit.' ""I am absolutely amazed by the ingenuity of our Marines, and can't believe that something that started out as a mistake, then turned into a joke, ended up saving someone's life.
My sister said she doesn't believe in mistakes. She believes God had a plan all along. She believes that female care package was sent to Marine X to save our Marine."
"Either way, our efforts have boosted the morale of many Marines, provided much needed items for our troops, AND saved the life of aMarine!
God bless every one of you for your efforts and hard work, and God bless our Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force, and everyone.
"GOD BLESS AMERICA AND KEEP IT SAFE!"

Masterforce!
One of the anime series that truly made an impact on me during my primary school days was not He-Man, Care Bears, Starcom, M.A.S.K or even the almighty Visionaries (although I still remembered them very well) but rather a little known Japanese Transformers series known as Masterforce.
Little wonder because it was only shown on RTM 2 if I recalled correctly (Mediacorp or SBC then has already started to suck, especially in its cartoon palatte). I would religiously wake up every Sunday morning to feast my eyes on the Japanese drawn Transformers and in my mind, I knew where my allegiances lie. The American version was badly dranw and most of the time badly animated but not so the Jap ones.
Masterforce featured one of my heroes, Optimus Prime, although in the series he was not really Prime himself (otherwise known as Convoy in Japan) but rather a character named Ginrai.
Why, you ask?
You gotta watch this bumper video to find out.
Anyway, I am such a fan of Optimus that currently I already own three of him in varying sizes including a very battered God Ginrai (okay, okay, it's also called Powermaster Optimus Prime in the States). The other 2 are a 150 buck 20th Anniversary Prime and a Takara mini Prime piece measuring no less than 20cm, transformable and setting me back by more than 100 bucks.
The 20th Anniversary Optimus Prime which I have to settle for the 150 dollar Hasbro version because its cheaper than the Takara one with steel steam pipes. Hasbro's version is plastic and Prime comes with ugly burnt marks. Yucks, but oh well.
The Takara THS-02 Optimus Prime! Comes with trailer, changeable hands, Energon axe, blasters, mini cab and jet pack etc etc in its less than 20cm frame! AND its fucking transformable loh! It's my fave piece especially when you consider that this is one of the last Transformer figurines to come out of Takara before its merger with Tomy.
The ultra-poseable Revoltech Optimus Prime costing about 32 dollars at Rapid Culture in Cineleisure. I love my Transformers super poseable because the G1 stuff were all huge chunks of immobile plastic (my poor Powermaster Optimus Prime was one of them). Toy making technology now sure blows me away these days. :)
And for nostalgia, my Powermaster Optimus Prime that I pestered my dad to buy (a huge gift considering how expensive Transformer toys were in our heady 80s days.) Think I got it as a birthday gift but too bad now I have lost the little Powermaster figurine and poor Prime himself is pretty battered coz of age. This one in the picture is pretty well-maintained. :)
LOL, the wife can surely attest to my geekery when it came to Prime himself. In fact, I am looking to buy this ultra-poseable Prime figure that will cost 32 dollars as well as the movie adaptation (over 90 bucks) if I am mad enough, haha!
Of course, if the Moonies wanna get it for me, I will be overjoyed! Really! *hint hint
Talking of the latest Transformer craze, I am a little miffed by how Prime and the other G1 Transformers look (OMG, what happened to Bumblebee!!!!) in the upcoming Michael Bay film as I feel that they are all over-designed, I will still watch it for the fandom and....for Peter Cullen!
Yes, Peter WAS the guy behind Prime's voice in the American cartoons and seeing his name leaked in the credits months before sets my very otaku blood on fire.
June 28th. I cannot wait!

How Could You?
When I was a puppy, I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh. You called me your child, and despite a number of chewed shoes and a couple of murdered throw pillows, age I became your best friend. Whenever I was ”bad,” you’d shake your finger at me and ask “How could you?”-but then you’d relent, and roll me over for a belly rub.
My housebreaking took a little longer than expected, because you were terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights of nuzzling you in bed and listening to your confidences and secret dreams, and I believed that life could not be any more perfect. We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides, stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because “ice cream is bad for dogs,” you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home at the end of the day.
Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career, and more time searching for a human mate. I waited for you patiently, comfort you through heartbreaks and disappointments, never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee at your homecomings, and when you fell in love. She, now your wife, is not a “dog person”-still I welcomed her into our home, tried to show her affection, and obeyed her. I was happy because you were happy.
Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement. I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled, and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time banished to another room, or to a dog crate. Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a “prisoner of love.”
As they began to grow, I became their friend. They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs, poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears, and gave me kisses on my nose. I loved everything about them and their touch-because your touch was now so infrequent-and I would have defended them with my life if need be. I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams, and together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.
There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog, that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me.
These past few years, you just answered “yes” and changed the subject. I had gone from being “your dog” to “just a dog,” and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.
Now, you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving to an apartment that does not allow pets. You’ve made the right decision for your “family,” but there was a time when I was your only family. I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter. It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness. You filled out the paperwork and said “I know you will find a good home for her.”
They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities facing a middle-aged dog, even one with “papers.” You had to pry your son’s fingers loose from my collar as he screamed “No, Daddy! Please don’t let them take my dog!” And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life. You gave me a good-bye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you. You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too.
After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home.
They shook their heads and asked “How could you?”
They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow. They feed us, of course, but I lost my appetite days ago. At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you- that you had changed your mind-that this was all a bad dream … or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.
When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate, I retreated to a far corner and waited.
I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day, and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room.
She placed me on the table and rubbed my ears, and told me not to worry. My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come, but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days. As is my nature, I was more concerned about her.
The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her, and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood. She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek. I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago. She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily, looked into her kind eyes and murmured “How could you?”
Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said “I’m so sorry.” She hugged me, and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn’t be ignored or abused or abandoned, or have to fend for myself-a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place. And with my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail that my “How could you?” was not directed at her.
It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of. I will think of you and wait for you forever.
May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty?
By Jim Willis 2001
A note from the author: If “How Could You?” brought tears to your eyes as you read it, as it did to mine as I wrote it, it is because it is the composite story of the millions of formerly owned pets who die each year in American and Canadian animal shelters. Anyone is welcome to distribute the essay for a non-commercial purpose, as long as it is properly attributed with the copyright notice.
Please use it to help educate, on your websites, in newsletters, on animal shelter and vet office bulletin boards. Tell the public that the decision to add a pet to the family is an important one for life, that animals deserve our love and sensible care, that finding another appropriate home for your animal is your responsibility and any local humane society or animal welfare league can offer you good advice, and that all life is precious. Please do your part to stop the killing, and encourage adoption.

Do You Remember 阿凡提?
Affendi is this Arabian smartpants who enjoys ridiculing the rich and righting wrongs for the downtrodden and his stories, like Aesop's Fables, always had a message at the end; though sometimes they may not be immediately apparent.
England Translation:
One day, Affendi's wife was dressing up to attend a wedding. However she had NO idea what to wear. After much effort, she managed to narrow down to a few choices and after which, she asked Affendi, "Which do you think I should wear?"
"Well, if you have worn this one, you would surely end up not being happy with your choice and so will the other. Why don't you just wear EVERYTHING?" (Imagine Affendi in a dead pan expression)
Hilarious la, and yet still so timely and typical of women. Haha!
Here's another:
England Translation:
One day, the King and five of his retainers appeared at Affendi's inn for a meal which consisted a egg pancakes.
"Affendi! Look, I am filled now and will need to continue on my hunting session. How much was the meal?" asked the king.
"That would be a thousand gold pieces, Your Majesty."
"Fwah! So expensive? Your town short of eggs is it?" asked the flustered king.
"Far from it. Instead it's about you, oh King, if I have charged you any less, would it not do injustice to your esteemed position?

No Sex Please, We Are Singaporeans!
LOL :D
Anyhow, the start of the matter was some girl saw the book being sold AND read by a couple of pre-pubescent individuals and got suitably appalled enough to alert the authorities about it.
Wrong move, girl friend.
This is Singapore, or have you forgotten??
We are the people who pride in doing everything with abject unsubtlety and we are also the ones guilty of the bloody NUTS syndrome all the way to the top.
If something does not agree with a pre-mediated and pre-set category, we get it out of our system without even a second thought.
The same happened to the graphic novel entitled, "How To Make Money Like A Porn Star" (the title alone will definitely set some idiots on fire in MDA without even taking a closer look at the book, that's for sure).
It got banned.
Yes, the same treatment the poor chewing gum got.
Why?
Because banning is easy. Banning is the penultimate display of power. Banning simply asks for the matter at hand to disappear and hopefully the airheads of the peasants which are your typical Singaporean will forget come the next unsavory media flavor of the month.
That's why I hate living here.
Let's not talk about the damn tomfoolery that's NS which wasted my time and the time of many others.
Let's instead talk about the utterly conventional, "kiasee"and high-handed mentality that the Singaporean management has for Singapore Inc.
We are just not prepared to be a world class place despite ourselves boasting of world class facilities because most of our people (especially the ones at the top) do NOT have world class sensibilities and faculties to see things beyond what it is.
Take this porn book debacle as a base.
To our loving Big Brother, this IS porn (why, because see, it's showing all the woman bits and explicit scenes). And as we are all taught since the good old PAP kindergarten days, porn is baaaad.
Baaaaaad
And what is baaaad gets baaaaned!!! (Shuddup, the rest of you, voices of dissent, I swear the ISA will get you someday.)
And thanks to this storm in a teacup, the NLB gets implicated because some fucking parent reported that her kid is reading some ultra-violent comic that seems to be freely accessible in the library.
And the result is all too predictable. The comic gets pulled.
And if that's not enough, reputable bookstores like Kino (which shrink-wraps their stuff) and Borders get the shite as well. The comic in question is also not available anymore.
See lah, now other mature readers like ME won't be able to read these fine stories simply because the prude parents of impressionable minds are ruining it for the rest of us!
Good game, Singapore.
Now I am all for protecting our young minds, don't get me wrong, but why extend the ban stick in such a way that ruins the day for everyone?
Parents, please PLEASE PLEASE, regulate your kids! Don't leave it to your beloved Men in White to do it. You brought the kid to the world, you take charge. If your darn offspring is reading or watching something you don't think is good for them, get them away from it and teach them about it. Not go out and wriggled your fingers at some service targetted at the general public and blame them for not policing these materials for you!
Hell, you do it for the poisonous stuff in the house right, then why not for literature and the rest of the media??
That's fucking lazy parenthood.
And to you, the gahmen, is it also because you guys are too lazy in your cushy Civil Service positions and freaking 2 - 3 months bonus and other freaking privileges to even want to delve deeper into the matter and solve it at its roots? Like maybe you know, shrink-wrapping the adult stuff and placing it where the kids cannot get them. Hey, you are part of a world class and capable government you know, right? RIGHT?
I know this entry won't change anything but it just gives me yet another reason to leave this island which I am thinking of doing so for the longest time.
So what for safety, stability and shit that they keep harping about during those passioned NDP bullcrap?
Give me sanity, fairness and a place that lets people think for themselves.
Singapore is seriously lacking these.

Feeding the Multitudes
One was jet black, the other a mixture of black and white and the last one was totally grey.
We estimated that they were no more than a month old and extremely skinny at that.
Which is kind of a no-brainer since the three were strays and have no real access to regular feeding times.
Was tempted to catch the grey one but it was really feral and hissed whenever I got too near.
As it was late and we had nothing on us to make them feel better, we decided to come back the next day - with food, since Nerma's food is being left uneaten anyway, which is sad.
***
Saturday came.
After a silly IPPT session which I failed - for the second week running (haha, no pun intended), we made our way to Bishan to attempt to locate the felines. And boy were they elusive because they were NOWHERE to be found where we saw them the night before.
So we patroled...and patroled...AND patroled some more!
I think we roughly wound around the blocks for over two hours and still there were no signs of them.
I remembered mouthing a prayer for their safety when we finally caught sight of a stray cat that looked vaguely like the mother cat near a rubbish collection house.
But no, wrong cat.
However, we fed it anyway with the food that we brought. It was quite sad to see them gobbling up the food and all the while trying to remain wary of us and the surroundings even though there wasn't any sign of clear and present danger. Such is the life of a stray I guess.
Then we moved on to search for the cats and found ourselves in the multi-storey carpark where we were literally leaving no cars "unturned" as we looked under every one of them to see if the mother and her brood were hiding underneath.
No luck.
But we did find a black, scabby stray and a rather plump (we suspected it is a house cat left to roam) one which we promptly fed as well. Same reactions to the food and also the same, unrelenting fear of the environment.
Sigh.
Just when we were giving up (we even went back to the rubbish house to feed the first stray we saw a few more times), we spotted the little furry darlings and they were hidden in a drain near where we saw them last night!!!
The drain functioned like some Vietcong hideout for them since it's exceptionally hard to spot them if you are not trying and difficult to get at them since the gratings were soldered together and hard to get off. And dun even think about reaching in to grab them because the openings are just too darn narrow.
So what we did was fill the paper box that the Wife always makes at home with good old Science Diet pellets, rattled the box and placed it outside the bunker like peepholes and THEN backed off.
Obviously, the kittens heard AND smelt the food coz after a few wary minutes they squeezed through the narrow gaps and munched on the pellets.
It was gratifying and really satisfying. For the first time, the Wife and I agreed that this was a really meaningful way to spend a weekend as we enjoyed the void deck breeze and watched the cats eat.
After an hour, we left for Junction 8 for a Shrek 3 movie screening (it was ok, but I found some parts not funny leh, you can go to liamxicorner.blogspot.com or better yet, goofyscrewball.blogspot.com for a more indepth review) and also made plans to go back to the kittens again after the show for their dinner as well as trying to get the mom to eat something (she wasn't at the scene when her kittens were eating the pellets).
You can imagine how dark it was at 8 - 9 plus as we took a can of wet cat food and went around again trying to find the mother. We eventually located her (we recognised the slightly drooping nipples from all her nursing) near an amphitheatre and proceeded to give her the food - all the time remaining at a safe distance away in order not to scare her off.
After an hour or so, we finally filled the mom up as she scampered back into her drain home, bewildered that two humans actually came and fed her - to her fill no less.
The Wife wanted to come back again on Sunday so I agreed but I could only meet her later in the day.
***
The very next day, Sunday, got me up really early as there was a Magic tournament which I decided to join after a three month rest from burnout. Didn't do too well, lost all my games since I am almost outta touch and it showed.
Disgusted I dropped after the fourth loss and join the Wife at Bishan St 22, blk 288 (well, if you really wanna know where the cats are) to try to find the strays, mother and all.
Same cycle again, (Darn, the kittens and mom are HARD to find, I tell you), before the Wife managed to find the mom resting under some bushes. We fed her again and this time, it's nice to see that the mom has some glimmer of recognition although she is still relatively guarded. She even planned to give us the slip after the feeding by appearing to run off (when in fact she just ducked back into the bushes, there were blind spots, you see.) and then just as we were given the false trail, try to run back to the drain which was in the opposite direction.
See, cats are damn smart.
I refuse to give in to the ruse and went back to where we were at the feeding spot and sure enough, was in time to see her failed escape attempt. Not that she bothered as she just ran back to her drain home.
We followed back to the Vietcong bunker and lo and behold, saw the other three kids.
With some effort, I pried open the drain grating and placed some food in. Almost immediately the grey kitten (which we name as Greyee), the black-white one (Xiao Hei Bai) and the black one (Charcoal) swooshed out and had a go at the food although Charcoal was too engrossed with swiping at a straw in the drain to eat much and ate it did in the end.
We spent about an hour there, finishing our food stock while looking at the kittens and generally feeling good about it. Of course, the mother was there as well, and it's as if she really does recognise us coz she didn't hiss as much when we were putting the food in. The kittens did hiss a little in their small kitten-ish way but no biggie.
They have been taught to fear after all.
Oh well, that was how we spent the weekend and as for the cats, we plan to feed them for as long as we could because goodness knows how long they must starve otherwise.
No wonder strays do not live for so long. If it's not a rival cat, fleas or unsavory living conditions, it's hunger that will do them in.
The Wife even coomented that our very own TPY community cats were more showy and unafraid of people compared to the Bishan ones which undeniably ALL exhibited that same look of wary cautiousness when coming face to face with our two-legged kind.
I whimsically replied that maybe Bishan has more cat abusers (remembering that my friend who lives in Sin Ming had his cat brutally kicked to death, and the cat even had the strength to stagger home and struggled for days before biting it).
At the risk of making this post sounding more and more like a pet activist one, I only have one true wish - that Singapore of the tomorrows can be a more pet-friendly place.
After all, you are only as human or "First World" as how you treat those around you, especially those who are of a lower level in society or those have no means to defend themselves.
And this definitely does NOT just apply to humans.

The Prince and the Pauper
Why the hate? Why the belittlement? Why the intense, merciless ribbing and competition? Aren't the both of you under the same roof? Can't you spare a thought for the less well-off sibling and try to help her regain her feet?
It's hard I know.
Or maybe I am just a sickening romanticist.

Anyway, guess what? I finally got my grubby hands on Tomb Raider: Anniversary!!!! The tenth year remake of Lara's very first adventure from way back in 1996.

Pure pixelated sexiness in 1996!

Ahh, now she looks more rounded, leaner and tougher. Jolie, move aside!
Now the nights just got a whole lot more exciting!!

Ravenclaw!
I cannot wait!
Maybe we can dress up for the movie outing?
But anyway, here's a little test I did about which House I belong. I think I did it before and the result is still the same, I am a certified Ravenclaw. Which House do YOU belong to?

I'm a Ravenclaw!
What is your melody?
Anyway, I think I got more better sounding songs than him. What can I say? August is a great month to be born in - as I am sure Nani would concur.
LOL :D
Here's the list of all the number ones according to Billboard Magazine on August 6th 1980 to 2006:
THE 1980s
1980 ... "Magic" by Olivia Newton-John
Never heard of this but Olivia is that famous lady from Grease so yea, I am not completely clueless, LOL!
1981 ... "Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield
Nice song which I still hear on Class95, but not my fave.
1982 ... "Eye of the Tiger" by Survivor
Now we are talking, Rocky Balboa+Rocky training videos+this song= GYM TIME!!! Highly inspirational.
1983 ... "Every Breath You Take" by The Police
Another smooth track which gets remade last couple of years ago by a black guy I cannot put a name to.
1984 ... "Ghostbusters" by Ray Parker, Jr.
Marshmellow Man and Rick "Moron"-is!!!! 'Nuff said.
1985 ... "Shout" by Tears for Fears
Ah, I know this group but I really prefer "Everybody Wants To Rule The World"
1986 ... "Glory of Love" by Peter Cetera
Cheesy but I lap it up anyway.
1987 ... "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" by U2
Gah, no recollection of this song.
1988 ... "Roll with It" by Steve Winwood
Ditto.
1989 ... "Right Here Waiting" by Richard Marx
Cool song with an equally cool, if not memorable singer. This is a song still sung in K-Boxes and bathrooms all over Singapore today.
THE 1990s
1990 ... "Vision of Love" by Mariah Carey
Ok, I concede, MC's great in this song.
1991 ... "(Everything I Do) I Do It for You" by Bryan Adams
Another one of my MEGA tracks!!! I LOVE Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves ALOT and also this song. Bryan Adams is just the icing.
1992 ... "This Used to Be My Playground" by Madonna
Slow track from the pointy-bra-ed one which is nice to listen to, if you are in the mood.
1993 ... "Can't Help Falling in Love" by UB40
Raggae funk, this is when I was in the heady Sec 1 days.
1994 ... "Stay (I Missed You)" by Lisa Loeb & Nine Stories
I was listening to Four Heavenly Kings during this period, so english pop was a total blackout for me here.
1995 ... "Waterfalls" by TLC
Here also.
1996 ... "Macarena [Bayside Boys Mix]" by Los Del Rio
Argh, August 6th was also plagued with the malady that was Macarena and that vile plant, the Lemon Tree, let this day not be forgotten.
1997 ... "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy & Faith Evans featuring 112
Niceeeeeee.
1998 ... "The Boy Is Mine" by Brandy & Monica
I love RnB so this is also a keeper although I like Brandy's vocals more.
1999 ... "Genie in a Bottle" by Christina Aguilera
You know I want to rub you the right way. LOL!
THE 2000s
2000 ... "Incomplete" by Sisqó
Chinese Pop invaded again, so second blackout occurred about here.
2001 ... "Bootylicious" by Destiny's Child
Who can seriously say no to Destiny's Child songs and the airplay this song got bordered on the insane.
2002 ... "Hot in Herre" by Nelly
Hot track literally, I was in camp then and there was this regular
in my bunk who goes around in nothing
but his briefs singing this song complete dance moves!!!
Traumatic but it made this song stick in mind ever since.
2003 ... "Crazy in Love" by Beyoncé featuring Jay-Z
C...C...Cannot...Shake....That...Quiver...Quivering...
B...B...Booty...F...From....m...M...My...Mind....
Beyonce, You are one hot chick. Jay-Z, you suck.
2004 ... "Slow Motion" by Juvenile featuring Soulja Slim
Nice song lah, but I seriously cannot remember this liao.
2005 ... "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey
Yet another MC number one, not really my favorite but it's radio-friendly.
2006 ... "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado featuring Timbaland
WAHHHH!!!! I love this song. Nelly's a full-blooded MILF and this song just oozes "SEXY" all over it.
Honorable Mentions (My personal Number Ones):
1980s
Diana Ross' "Land Before Time" song, cannot remember the title.
1990s
Any shite from the Pet Shop Boys.
2000s
Any track from Justin Timberlake's "Justified" album.
...And Many Bloody Happy Returns!
This entry is not long but that don't mean it's not heartfelt. Enjoy your hatching day, girls. :)

It ain't Christmas but still...
Sing it to the tune of "Walking in a Winter Wonderland".
Sirens ring
are you listening
in the lane
blood is flowing
A beautiful sight
we're happy tonight
walking in a Jihad wonderland
Gone away is our wisdom
here to stay is a new idiom
He sings a love song
as we go along
walking in a Jihad wonderland
In the Green Zone we can send a
bombman
Then pretend that he is from Kellog
Brown
He'll say: Are you married?
we'll say: No man
But you can do the job
when you're in town
Later on
we'll conspire
as we dream by the fire
To face unafraid
the plans that we've made
walking in a Jihad wonderland
In the garage we can build a carbomb
and send him to the cursed clowns
We'll have lots of fun with martyr bombman
until the infidels are knocked down
When we bomb
ain't it thrilling
Though your nose gets a chilling
We'll slaughter then pray
the Mujahid way
walking in a Jihad wonderland
Walking in a Jihad wonderland
walking in a Jihad wonderland
Damn morbidly funny.
Lunch with Toe Knee Tan
People said I am lucky to be able to step into the huge, grand boardroom just barely weeks into my employment but really I don't see it that way.
I am just indifferrent like that, I guess.
PS: I liked the Tau Kwa Pau!

After 15 - 20 minutes the ordeal is over and I am back in my comfy seat typing drivel that you are now reading.
Glad I was not some star.
Okay, maybe give me those dough they are earning but not the attention and...and...these tiresome studio shoots.

Spoke to an old colleague of mine who used to play WoW (World of Warcraft), the guy has seen it all and played it to death. On top of it, he's a bloody guild leader. Anyhow, he quitted 3 months ago and was telling me that Azeroth is slowing going to the dogs.
Grafikki u started playing WoW?
J450N: Black Morass is a pain yea since last year
Grafikki hahah which server?
J450N: Black Morass is a pain Kargath
J450N: Black Morass is a pain u?
Grafikki i quit liao. i completed all the heoric mode instances
Grafikki and i got bored
Grafikki my toon is on Kirin Tor
Grafikki all decked with the epics from xpac BUT some blues are equal to the epics which is farking stoopid
Grafikki so i quit the game
J450N: Black Morass is a pain lol
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i am just abt started on the xpac
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i heard attunemnt is getting more difficult in the future which i think is stupid
J450N: Black Morass is a pain so i may quit it soon, i dunno, but i kinda love my druid
Grafikki attunement is easy... just need guildies who know their shit
Grafikki if you're not hardcore or in a hardcore guild- fuck it liao
Grafikki casual gamers will be left behind in the game
Grafikki when i started heroic mode... if u didnt have Karazhan or Gruul epics.. u better be the freaking good at your toon
Grafikki my warrior was taking 15k damage on 12k health on some mobs in heroic Acatraz
Grafikki fucked up game
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i think its power creep
J450N: Black Morass is a pain happens in every game just the dgree
J450N: Black Morass is a pain *degree
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i m more or less casual la so yea haha
Grafikki last time not so much
Grafikki xpac makes it a very- u suxxor, i pwn joo game
Grafikki which i hated...
J450N: Black Morass is a pain wat i mean is attunement nxt time may require us to visit every damn heroic instance whch is dumb
Grafikki bcos the guild i ran was built on Arthurian codes of the round table
Grafikki i completed the Black Temple attunement liao
J450N: Black Morass is a pain wat tht mena?
J450N: Black Morass is a pain *mean
Grafikki but i'm finding hard to help the weaker players
J450N: Black Morass is a pain wow
J450N: Black Morass is a pain y?
Grafikki ifu dunno how to heal/dps/manage aggro.
Grafikki a little mistake means wipe in Heroic mode
Grafikki and the mobs repop farking fast
J450N: Black Morass is a pain YES!! i feel the same way
Grafikki and i'm one of 5 elite tanks in guild due to raid setup
J450N: Black Morass is a pain one moment they are dead, the next they are back
J450N: Black Morass is a pain wat ur class? warrior?
Grafikki can't recruit more cos else- no raid slots
Grafikki yep
J450N: Black Morass is a pain u are the guildmaster right?
Grafikki so if i have to find the core team to drag shit players through attunement
Grafikki i'd rather get my teeth pulled out
J450N: Black Morass is a pain u mean new players these days are lousy?
Grafikki ok- WoW original was 40 man raiding = 40 people pushing buttons = u only needed 15 people to know their shit. the other 25 can cruise along
Grafikki down a boss, get epic gear which made subsequent encounters easier
Grafikki Xpac = 100% folks have to know their shit
Grafikki The tank had to be Farking good to hold multi aggro
Grafikki i was holding 6 mobs without Thunderfury
J450N: Black Morass is a pain woah
Grafikki the average non-raid tank in my guild cld hold only 2
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i guess with practice they can be better la
Grafikki I just stack High Shield Block rating and value items
Grafikki my shield slam was doing 1.5k damage onto of high threat
Grafikki this was before Thunderclap was buffed
J450N: Black Morass is a pain thts incredible to me already
J450N: Black Morass is a pain although i dun know much abt the warrior class
Grafikki with practice- it also takes a particular mindset to learn everything about aggro management and threat
J450N: Black Morass is a pain wat kinda mindset?
Grafikki well... WoW in Xpac basically becomes like school of life
Grafikki u have to learn about ALL possibilities
Grafikki for instance- Healing- flash heal, big heal= how much threat
Grafikki Focus fire DPS on single mobs
Grafikki which mobs are attacked first
Grafikki which mobs, heal, mind control, dps
Grafikki so critical mobs are handled first
Grafikki crowd control
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i mean these things after a while will get the hang of it
Grafikki using fear, watching the terrain maping so that mobs dont run around and aggro the whole dungeon
Grafikki erm no
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i hate fear, it bad most of the time
Grafikki i noticed a lot of american players think very short term
J450N: Black Morass is a pain aiyo
Grafikki Fear is a very necessary form of crowd control in Xpac
Grafikki Black Morass is easy for me
J450N: Black Morass is a pain yea necessary but has to see when to use
Grafikki Know why? I got a good healer
J450N: Black Morass is a pain yea i know
Grafikki First wave comes- I intimidating shout
Grafikki so that means they run, and auto aggro on me
Grafikki my DPSers dont have to worry about getting hit
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i did till the 14th wave on the back of a great healer until a lag spike and everything went to ashes
Grafikki and extra mobs not dead gets a thunderclap from me, so that i hold initial aggro
Grafikki i've gotten to the point where the shield doesnt even get damaged
Grafikki or at most 98%
J450N: Black Morass is a pain sigh
Grafikki and 98% is when instance bugged and two portals opened at the same time
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i just cant seem to complete it
(Conversation is abridged here)
Grafikki well... my best advice- give up the game and go get real life epics.. i've yet to find a properly tuned MMO.. i thought WoW original was it
Grafikki but Blizzard hired the imbeciles from Everquest to do the Xpac
Grafikki which is why things are the way they are
J450N: Black Morass is a pain not yet for me, i just wanna complete my dungeon set and then its bye
J450N: Black Morass is a pain oh cheebye no wonder
Grafikki Bill Roper, the brains behind all the WoW storylines etc quit to do Hellgate
J450N: Black Morass is a pain its a pride thing
Grafikki cos he hated the direction of where WoW was going
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i may play Hellgate
Grafikki farking all the xpac weapons look damn gay lor
J450N: Black Morass is a pain i was in US last year to look at it
Grafikki so colorful and so anime
***
So, yea, Azeroth IS going Mardi Gras, will I stick around and watch my characters all wear rainbow-colored armor?
Stay tuned.

New Place Touchdown
Updates are not as prompt as before (and will continue to be thus, don't expect this post to turn anything around, LOL) due to my innate slothy nature and I would like to sound out that I miss the Moonies.
When are we going to play badminton? (If ever it's gonna happen again what with us getting busy with either work or being frisky with our partners [I am sorry, this is the Tuhan's blog so sexual innuendoes are a given])
Lately also saw some things happy and sad happening. Very recent ones that come to mind are the fact that the Wife has ended her job search and will start with this new pharmaceutical firm next month as an admin support.
The bad?
Well, two nights ago we suddenly got a call from the Wife's cousins telling us that her 3rd uncle has keeled over and passed away despite being given a clean bill of health just days before. This is indeed unfortunate since her 5th uncle also died of a similar circumstance.
One cousin suspects hypertension running in the family.
The heartwrenching thing is that this particular uncle is set for release from the prisons come July and he has been coming home regularly over the weekends and stuff but now, he's gone. The two daughters he left behind were visibly shaken and very distraught when I saw them on the night of 23rd May at NUH.
I mean, I just saw the guy two weeks ago!
Life can be really a bitch sometimes and when you gotta go, you gotta go.
The thing I am pondering is that this uncle has actually taken to going to a church recently and I have no idea whether he has converted or not, but I do see this as a sign of mercy from the Almighty. Imagine him suddenly dropping dead behind bars without even having the chance to see his children?
At least he was given the right to come out recently, which on hindsight, was perhaps a last couple of opportunities for him to enjoy his family before he goes away...
Oh well, may God bless his soul.
