The recent media furore over the sale of an unwrapped graphic novel (I shudder to use the term "comic book" because idiots out there will misconstrue it as something that's for kids, bloody hell) that featured adult content in a kid's section during the Book Fair which ended some days back has got me thinking. Seriously, the dyslexicpimp is capable of fathoming serious issues here.
LOL :D
Anyhow, the start of the matter was some girl saw the book being sold AND read by a couple of pre-pubescent individuals and got suitably appalled enough to alert the authorities about it.
Wrong move, girl friend.
This is Singapore, or have you forgotten??
We are the people who pride in doing everything with abject unsubtlety and we are also the ones guilty of the bloody NUTS syndrome all the way to the top.
If something does not agree with a pre-mediated and pre-set category, we get it out of our system without even a second thought.
The same happened to the graphic novel entitled, "How To Make Money Like A Porn Star" (the title alone will definitely set some idiots on fire in MDA without even taking a closer look at the book, that's for sure).
It got banned.
Yes, the same treatment the poor chewing gum got.
Why?
Because banning is easy. Banning is the penultimate display of power. Banning simply asks for the matter at hand to disappear and hopefully the airheads of the peasants which are your typical Singaporean will forget come the next unsavory media flavor of the month.
That's why I hate living here.
Let's not talk about the damn tomfoolery that's NS which wasted my time and the time of many others.
Let's instead talk about the utterly conventional, "kiasee"and high-handed mentality that the Singaporean management has for Singapore Inc.
We are just not prepared to be a world class place despite ourselves boasting of world class facilities because most of our people (especially the ones at the top) do NOT have world class sensibilities and faculties to see things beyond what it is.
Take this porn book debacle as a base.
To our loving Big Brother, this IS porn (why, because see, it's showing all the woman bits and explicit scenes). And as we are all taught since the good old PAP kindergarten days, porn is baaaad.
Baaaaaad
And what is baaaad gets baaaaned!!! (Shuddup, the rest of you, voices of dissent, I swear the ISA will get you someday.)
And thanks to this storm in a teacup, the NLB gets implicated because some fucking parent reported that her kid is reading some ultra-violent comic that seems to be freely accessible in the library.
And the result is all too predictable. The comic gets pulled.
And if that's not enough, reputable bookstores like Kino (which shrink-wraps their stuff) and Borders get the shite as well. The comic in question is also not available anymore.
See lah, now other mature readers like ME won't be able to read these fine stories simply because the prude parents of impressionable minds are ruining it for the rest of us!
Good game, Singapore.
Now I am all for protecting our young minds, don't get me wrong, but why extend the ban stick in such a way that ruins the day for everyone?
Parents, please PLEASE PLEASE, regulate your kids! Don't leave it to your beloved Men in White to do it. You brought the kid to the world, you take charge. If your darn offspring is reading or watching something you don't think is good for them, get them away from it and teach them about it. Not go out and wriggled your fingers at some service targetted at the general public and blame them for not policing these materials for you!
Hell, you do it for the poisonous stuff in the house right, then why not for literature and the rest of the media??
That's fucking lazy parenthood.
And to you, the gahmen, is it also because you guys are too lazy in your cushy Civil Service positions and freaking 2 - 3 months bonus and other freaking privileges to even want to delve deeper into the matter and solve it at its roots? Like maybe you know, shrink-wrapping the adult stuff and placing it where the kids cannot get them. Hey, you are part of a world class and capable government you know, right? RIGHT?
I know this entry won't change anything but it just gives me yet another reason to leave this island which I am thinking of doing so for the longest time.
So what for safety, stability and shit that they keep harping about during those passioned NDP bullcrap?
Give me sanity, fairness and a place that lets people think for themselves.
Singapore is seriously lacking these.
